Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener Ken Onion Edition Review

Work Sharp Ken Onion and KTS Knife and Tool Sharpener

What's more dangerous than a abrupt knife?  That'south simple, it's a slow knife!

Dull knives are dangerous because a tiresome blade requires more strength to cutting and tin result in bract slipping off and missing the cut. A sharp blade is predictable.

Work Sharp is a 4th generation, family-owned company based in Ashland Oregon. They also brand the Drill Doctor – a drill bit sharpening tool.

Over the final 10 years, the Work Abrupt system allows me to acuminate any contour edge; straight or recurve. Information technology works past using a flexible annoying belt and precision sharpening guides.

It's neither difficult nor time-consuming, to use the Work Abrupt knife and tool sharpening system to sharpen a knife.  Once y'all larn the technique it requires very little effort to accurately and precisely sharpen knives and tools.

The sharpening system allows me to avert sending tools out for sharpening.  A couple of years of using a sharpening service will cost more than investing in this tool.

2 Work Sharp Tools Available

Work Precipitous offers two versions of this tool, and I've used both. The original KTS sharpening system and the Ken Onion version. There are three primal differences, between the 2, that you demand to know are:

Bending Guides

The Ken Onion version used iii/iv″ x 12″ annoying belts and has adjustable bending guides from fifteen°-30° (in 1° increment) The original KTS version has 2 guides that allow angles from twenty°, 25°, and 65°scissor guide.

Motor

The Ken Onion Version has a variable-speed trigger that allows you lot to increase the speed for faster sharpening or decrease it for a more precise approach. The variable speed is managed through the trigger, the more you pull the faster information technology goes.

The Ken Onion version besides has a heavy-duty motor that weighs twice as much as the original KTS version. This boosted weight comes from the larger variable speed motor, larger overall size, and cast metal components.

The original KTS tin be run on Intermittent or Total power, not-variable speed.

Annoying Belts

Both tools utilise Norton Norax Belts. The KTS comes with v total just only 3 different dust options, the Ken Onion comes with five different belts in unlike grits, but one of each.

The five belts offer you a broad range of grits to perform tasks as coarse as grinding and as fine as polishing an edge.

P120 Grit Belt

The P120 is a coarse belt that can be used for grinding or for fast stock removal from knives. This is a quality coated 3/4″ 10 12″ fabric belt.

Norton Norax Belts

There are three 3/4″ 10 12″ Norton Norax Belts included in the kit. The Norton Norax Belts apply very consistent aluminum oxide abrasives. The belts take a depth to the abrasive surface, unlike whatever other belts we conduct. The depth to the abrasives allows the abrasives to pause away and expose fresh abrasives below. This annoying configuration allows it to run cooler, last ii to 5 times longer, leave a very consistent terminate and fifty-fifty cut faster.

X65 Norax Chugalug – This three/4″ x 12″ belt features 65-micron aluminum oxide abrasive particles. This translates to roughly a P220 grit. This is a coarse chugalug that can exist used for about fibroid sharpening needs.

X22 Norax Belt – This 3/4″ ten 12″ belt features 22-micron aluminum oxide abrasive particles. This translates to roughly a P800 grit. This is a fine to a medium belt that tin be used to refine a coarsely sharpened edge or refine an edge that is starting to deadening.

X4 Norax Belt – This three/4″ ten 12″ belt features 4-micron aluminum oxide abrasive particles. This translates to roughly a P3000 grit. This is a very fine belt that can be used to put a very fine edge that is nigh mirror polished.

6000 Grit Chugalug

The 6000 grit belt is used to put the finest razor-sharp edge on your knives. This 1/2″ x 12″ thinner belt conforms to your knives then it tin can exist used to sharpen serrated edges equally well equally heavily curved edges like gut hooks.

Re-bend and Concave Blade sharpening

Some of the toughest knives to sharpen are knives that take a re-bend or a concave edge. The flexible belt blueprint allows you to easily sharpen these knives. The Ken Onion Edition will even acuminate a concave gut claw on hunting knives.

Scissors

This versatile sharpener will also tackle scissors and tools. A pair of scissors guide will hands and apace acuminate mutual household scissors to a 60° angle with no setup time

Sharpening Other Tools

The angle guides for each tool are removable and expose the belt on the triangle cassette. This can be used to acuminate a wide range of common shop and garden tools such equally lawnmower blades, axes, shovels, pruners, and more than.

While not designed for it, carpenters and woodworkers can also use this tool for sanding or smoothing in tight spaces due to the triangle pattern.

Cost

The KTS unit toll approximately $70  and the Ken Onion unit is priced at $130. I personally use the Ken Onion version every bit I like the adaptable angle feature and variable speed trigger.
